Plot summary
In 1867 James "Stretch" Dawson leads a gang of bank robbers out of town with the cavalry behind them. The soldiers give up the chase when the outlaws cross the desert, and heat and thirst nearly finish the men before they reach Yellow Sky, a ghost town whose only residents are a young woman, Constance Mae, called Mike, and her grandfather. Mike is hostile and armed, but she shows the gang a spring, and the outlaws recover there. Stretch is drawn to her. The other outlaws are Dude, Bull Run, Lengthy, Half Pint, Walrus and Jed. The grandfather prospects for gold in the hills above the town.

- A construction crew of over 150 men and women built a ghost town in the desert near Lone Pine, California, by demolishing a movie set called 'Last Outpost' that Tom Mix had built in 1923; at the request of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the horses worked only three hours a day in the intense heat.
- In a memo, studio head Darryl F. Zanuck suggested Walter Huston for the role of Grandpa and Fred Clark for Lengthy, and Paulette Goddard was originally cast as Mike.
