Plot summary
Arthur Winant comes to town to shop for equipment for a sports club, carrying a $5,000 check that is not his. Danny Haley, who runs an illegal gambling place and pays the police for protection, notices the check and brings Arthur to the closed establishment, where Soldier, Barney and Augie join him for poker. Danny loves the singer Fran Garland but tells her he cannot commit to a relationship. The first night the friends let Arthur win a little; the next evening they cheat him out of his cash and the $5,000. Arthur has mentioned an older brother, Sidney, who is expected in town the evening after.

- Dark City was Charlton Heston's first appearance in a professional film production, after David Bradley's amateur Peer Gynt (1941) and the educational, Chicago-based Julius Caesar (1950).
- Wendell Corey was cast as Captain Garvey, but his commitment to The Lady of the House, later retitled Harriet Craig, forced him to withdraw from Dark City.
- Spencer Selby's 1984 study of the genre, Dark City: the Film Noir, takes its title from the film and places it among the top 25 noir classics of all time, alongside Gilda, The Maltese Falcon and Double Indemnity.
