Plot summary
The Green Wizard Carolinus calls his three wizard brothers together. Magic is slipping from the world, he tells them, because people have come to trust logic and science instead. He proposes a last realm of magic, a refuge for fantastic creatures. The Blue Wizard Solarius and the Golden Wizard Lo Tae Zhao agree, but the Red Wizard Ommadon will not; he resolves to turn his black magic against humanity. Since wizards may not fight among themselves, the brothers send a party to steal Ommadon's crown. The knight Sir Orrin Neville-Smythe and the young dragon Gorbash carry an enchanted shield and a flute that puts dragons to sleep. Antiquity directs Carolinus a thousand years ahead, to Boston, where he finds Peter Dickinson, a board game designer obsessed with dragons, and brings him back through time.
