Plot summary
When the United States enters World War I, the first American units at the front in France include a veteran Marine company under Captain Flagg, with Lieutenants Moore and Aldrich beneath him. Flagg has a romance with Charmaine, the daughter of the local innkeeper, and takes it up again when he comes back from the lines, though he tells her he is married when she asks to come with him to Paris on his leave. Replacements arrive, and their slack discipline and ignorance anger him. He is waiting for a new top sergeant who can knock them into shape, and the man who reports for the job is Quirt, a rival from his past.
