Plot summary
Nick Cherney is serving time for stealing from Johnny Torno's freight company. He learns that Johnny's brother Jess, a Catholic chaplain, has come home from a prisoner-of-war camp. Nick arranges for another inmate, Rocky, to kill Jess as a way to hurt Johnny. Johnny reaches the scene too late. Before Jess dies, he tells Johnny that a clue to his murder is written in the Gideon Bible from his hotel room. The book is gone. Johnny begins his own investigation, which angers the police. He tracks down people who once stayed in that room, convinced one of them took the Bible. He also hires Carla North, a former guest who lost her brother in the war, to assist in the search. He asks her to live in his apartment while he moves into his office.
