Plot summary
Gloves Donahue runs a Broadway gambling outfit and takes his cheesecake seriously. When a restaurant serves him one not made by Mr. Miller, the baker he favors, his mother says the man has gone missing. Gloves finds Miller dead in the bakery and sees Leda Hamilton, a nightclub singer, leave the shop. Ma Donahue tracks Leda to Marty Callahan's club, and Marty calls Gloves to handle the disturbance. Leda's piano player, Pepi, pulls her into a back room, where Joe Denning, Marty's partner, is shot. Leda and Pepi vanish in a taxi, and Gloves, suspected of the killing, follows them to an antiques auction house run by Hall Ebbing, a front for Nazi saboteurs and their plan against a battleship in New York harbor.

- The double-talk scene, in which Humphrey Bogart and William Demarest baffle a room full of Nazi sympathizers, was not in the original script. Director Vincent Sherman thought it up himself and shot it against producer Hal Wallis's wishes; when Wallis ordered it cut, Sherman left some in, and a sneak preview audience exploded with laughter.
- Humphrey Bogart was not the first pick for the lead: the role was originally meant for gossip columnist Walter Winchell, who could not get time off. Producer Hal Wallis offered it next to George Raft, who turned it down, and it was one of several Bogart parts first offered to Raft.
- Before the female lead was cast, two major stars, Olivia de Havilland and Marlene Dietrich, were both considered for the part in All Through the Night.
