Joseph Crehan
Biography
Joseph Crehan was an American actor whose screen career ran from 1916 to 1965 and took in more than 300 films. Born in Baltimore, he studied at Calvert Hall College and Kent College of Law before drama drew him away. He began on stage in 1907 with the Chestnut Street Theater's stock company in Philadelphia, then acted in Baltimore, Boston and Washington, and later with the Morosco Stock Company in Los Angeles. Early roles were in light comedy, and he moved into character parts in his late thirties. His Broadway work included Twentieth Century, Lilly Turner and Those We Love. He was best known for playing Ulysses S. Grant, a part he played nine times between 1939 and 1958, with the general appearing in Union Pacific and in They Died with Their Boots On. In 1961 he appeared in the Western series Bat Masterson, billed as Joe Crehan. He died in 1966.
