Plot summary
Judge Roger Shaw sends a man to ten years in prison without parole, and a gang of racketeers decides to answer the judge with murder. They pick John Ellman, newly out of prison after a ten-year sentence Shaw gave him for a blow that killed a man, and ask him to keep watch on Shaw. Shaw is shot in his car, and Ellman, who heard the crash and ran to the scene, is taken for the killer. Nancy and Jimmy, who work for Dr. Evan Beaumont, saw the dead man placed in the car, but a stranger warns them to stay silent. Convicted after a trial in which his defense is barely argued, Ellman goes to the electric chair. Beaumont claims the body and brings it back with an experimental procedure.

- A few days before shooting was scheduled, Boris Karloff raised problems with his character John Ellman: the lack of speech felt too close to his role in Frankenstein (1931), and Ellman's Tarzan-like agility, he felt, would induce laughter. Wallis brought in three more writers.
- Though released uncut in the United States, the film was banned in Finland, Switzerland and Singapore for its gruesome content. Australia released it uncensored but with a preface title card: "Censorship Warning; Nervous and Excitable People Should Avoid This Horror Picture."
- In the United Kingdom the film was censored to shorten footage of Ellman's walk to the electric chair and to eliminate shots of his pulsing heart in a test tube.
