Plot summary
Johnny Jones came to the United States from Vienna after Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, and her temporary passport ran out three months ago. An immigration officer tells her that she must be married within a week or face deportation. She is involved with Barton Kendrick, a married publisher. In a rainstorm she meets Bill Smith, a writer with no money, who agrees to marry her for $17.80 a week so she can remain in the country. She hands him a check once a week, and two months in, Smith begins writing a book about the odd terms of their marriage and grows curious about the woman he married.
