Plot summary
Ralph Cotter is a career criminal, and his breakout from a prison work camp leaves his partner, Carleton, dead. On the outside he comes to Holiday, Carleton's sister, who had a hand in arranging the break, and she is drawn to him while he holds the threat of exposure over her. Cotter goes back into the crime game, and the corrupt policemen who run the city's rackets move in on him for a share; Inspector Charles Weber and Lieutenant John Reece are among those leaning on him. The crooked lawyer Keith 'Cherokee' Mandon is another figure in the circle, and Cotter also meets Margaret Dobson, a tycoon's daughter.
