Jerome Cowan

Biography

Jerome Cowan was an American actor whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television. Born in New York City, he made his Broadway debut in We've Got to Have Money in 1923. Samuel Goldwyn signed him to a film contract, and his first screen role was in Beloved Enemy. Across more than one hundred films, he became best known as Miles Archer, Sam Spade's partner, in The Maltese Falcon (1941), and as Thomas Mara, the district attorney who prosecutes Santa Claus, in Miracle on 34th Street (1947). He also played Mr. Radcliffe, Dagwood Bumstead's boss, in several Blondie movies, and appeared in High Sierra (1941) and Deadline at Dawn (1946). On television he starred in Not for Publication in 1952, appeared on Perry Mason and The Twilight Zone, and played John Larsen on The Tab Hunter Show from 1960 to 1961. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
