Plot summary
Union Captain Mike McComb is stripped of his rank after he burns the money he was guarding rather than let Confederate raiders take it. Humiliated in public, he and his friend 'Pistol' Porter take gambling equipment and head for Silver City, Nevada, to open a saloon. On the road he meets Georgia Moore, who manages the Silver River Mine alongside her husband Stanley and has hired up the local wagons for mining equipment. McComb wins those wagons in a poker game. In Silver City his saloon thrives, and he hires John Plato Beck as his lawyer.

- Stephen Longstreet, who wrote the story, said the stars' behavior caused delays and cost overruns that forced the studio heads to declare Silver River finished; he called it the only studio picture he knew of with no ending, the film closing "in midair".
- Jack L. Warner wrote a memo during the shoot warning that if Errol Flynn was late or liquor came on set, the studio would hold him legally and financially responsible for delays and might abrogate his contract and sue him for damages.
- Before Errol Flynn was cast, Warner Bros announced in December 1946 that the film would be a vehicle for Humphrey Bogart, with Owen Crump producing.
- Stephen Longstreet recalled arriving on set one morning to find director Raoul Walsh tearing pages out of the script because they contained "too much yak-yak"; Longstreet said he knew then the picture was in trouble.
- Throughout the shoot, Errol Flynn and Ann Sheridan sipped ice water laced with vodka, and Flynn told the writer Stephen Longstreet, "I can't make head nor tail of your story."
