Fritz Leiber
Biography
Fritz Leiber was an American actor who spent much of his career on the Shakespearean stage before becoming a familiar face in Hollywood films. Born in Chicago, he toured for years with a Shakespearean company, and he made his film debut in 1916 as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. Silent-era parts followed, including Caesar in Cleopatra and Solomon in The Queen of Sheba. In sound pictures he worked as a character actor, often in historical roles, and he could play priests, professors and musical professors. He portrayed an orchestra maestro in Champagne Waltz (1937), and his most notable musical part was Franz Liszt in Phantom of the Opera (1943). He also appeared in Camille (1936), The Great Garrick (1937) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), and he died in 1949.
