Plot summary
A Hayden-Colby quarrel that began in the hills of Kentucky follows both families west after the Civil War. Jed Colby is imprisoned for fifteen years for a killing that grew out of the feud, while the Haydens settle in Nevada. When his sentence ends, Colby goes to Nevada too, intending to settle the score. The man at the head of the Hayden family wants no more bloodshed, though a showdown looks unavoidable, and the situation is further tangled because Lynn Hayden and Ellen Colby, who come from the two opposing families, intend to marry. Vigilantes and the law both claim authority in the frontier country where the families have settled.
