Plot summary
Joan Graham is the secretary to Stephen Whitney, a public defender in a large city. She has waited for Eddie Taylor, a small-time criminal she believes is a decent man who has had hard luck, and Stephen arranges his release from prison on probation, though Joan's sister Bonnie and Stephen both doubt Eddie is good for her. Stephen also helps Eddie find work, and Eddie marries Joan and promises a straight life. The wedding night goes wrong when the inn recognizes Eddie's picture and turns the couple out, and he is fired on his first day as a truck driver for arriving late. He hunts for another job and turns down an offer from his old gang to take part in bank robberies, until the police blame him for a holdup he had nothing to do with.
