Plot summary
Ted Osborne, an adventure-seeker, has talked his fiancée Carole Lane into paying for a voyage to an uncharted island in the South Pacific where he says dinosaurs still live. They hire Captain Tarnowski and sail with him, and Tarnowski's friend John Fairbanks comes along reluctantly: he survived a shipwreck on the island, and the memory still shakes him. During the crossing he becomes attached to Carole, while the ship's crew grows uneasy about the destination ahead of them. Some of the men, frightened of what may await them on the island, try to take the ship before it reaches its destination.

- The dinosaurs in Unknown Island were papier-mâché puppets from a Carnival parade, and the film's "giant sloth" was Crash Corrigan in a moth-eaten gorilla suit.
- Unknown Island is in the public domain: its copyright was filed on December 1, 1948, and renewed on April 22, 1976, but because the film was released on October 15, 1948, that filing came too late and the copyright is by implication invalid.
