Plot summary

"Mac" MacKay, a mob boss, paid for James "Brick" Davis's law education, hoping the young lawyer would stay on the lawful side, and Davis has kept away from the underworld. A year after graduating, he has no clients in New York City because he will not trade his ideals for a paycheck. His friend Eddie Buchanan, a federal agent, urges him to join the Department of Justice; Davis holds back until Buchanan is shot while making an arrest, and then he sets out to catch the killer. He takes leave of MacKay and of Jean Morgan, a performer at MacKay's nightclub who cares for him, and reports to Washington, D.C. for training. There the instructor Jeff McCord mocks his efforts, while Davis is drawn to McCord's sister Kay.
