Plot summary
Tom Canty, son of the criminal John Canty, grows up in poverty and learns to read from Father Andrew. Edward Tudor, born the same day, is the son of King Henry VIII and lives as the Prince of Wales in isolated luxury, curious about the outside world. When Tom sneaks into the palace garden, the two are astounded by their resemblance and, as a prank, exchange clothes. Guards mistake Edward for the pauper and throw him off the palace grounds. Tom cannot convince anyone of his real identity except the Earl of Hertford; the rest of the court believes he is mentally ill. Outside, Edward meets Miles Hendon, who hears his story with amusement but does not believe it.

- Patric Knowles was cast as Miles Hendon in October, but Warner Bros head Jack L. Warner then decided he wanted an actor with a bigger name and asked Errol Flynn to take the part instead.
- Erich Wolfgang Korngold reused his score for the film: the second theme of the final movement of his violin concerto was drawn from the music he composed for The Prince and the Pauper.
