Plot summary

Kern Shafter, a captain in the U.S. Cavalry, wounds Lt. Edward Garnett, another officer, with a saber during a violent quarrel and says he acted to defend his fiancée's honor. A court-martial convicts him, and he loses his commission. He drifts for a time, then enlists again, this time as a private with the 7th Cavalry, and travels to Fort Abraham Lincoln in the Dakota Territory, meeting Josephine Russell on the way. His old friend Capt. Myles Moylan commands the company he joins, and Shafter takes the rank of sergeant. Garnett is posted at the same fort, now a captain with a company of his own. The two men hate each other, and their quarrel becomes a contest for Josephine.
