Plot summary
Clay Clayburn and Will Denning finish at West Point and visit their friend Braxton Summers at his Georgia plantation in 1861, where Clay has long been in love with Braxton's wife Kathy. War divides the two men onto opposite sides. By 1864 Clay is a Confederate artillery major known for taking on missions others do not survive. To slow General Sherman's advance, he is ordered to lead men and a disassembled cannon through caves to the top of Devil's Mountain, from which the guns can destroy a railroad carrying Union troops and supplies. Devil's Mountain stands near Braxton's plantation, where Kathy lives with her uncle Albert. Kathy agrees to watch the Union troops and signal Clay's men from her window, by mirror in daylight and by lantern after dark.
