Warren Hymer

Biography

Warren Hymer was an American stage and screen actor whose film work spanned 129 pictures between 1929 and 1946, following a 1928 appearance in the Broadway play The Grey Fox. Born in New York City and educated at Yale, he was typically cast as a dim-witted tough with a Brooklyn accent, often playing punch-drunk boxers, cheerful soldiers or sailors, and Runyonesque gangsters. Leading roles were scarce: he starred opposite Buster Keaton in The Gold Ghost (1934) and played one of three mobsters hired to assassinate Adolf Hitler in Hitler: Dead or Alive (1943). After a falling-out with Columbia chief Harry Cohn, Hymer was shut out of studio work for a stretch until Frank Capra cast him in Meet John Doe (1941). In Phantom Killer (1941), he stepped from sidekick to senior officer when the actor playing the police lieutenant was unable to finish, and played the remainder in a straight, unaccented voice. Hymer died in 1948.
