Plot summary
Mr. Morris runs a large city department store and staffs it partly with offenders released on parole, hoping to help them go straight; the rest of the employees are not told. Helen Roberts and Joe Dennis are two of these clerks. Joe has a violent past and decides he is not good enough for Helen, so he resigns and plans to leave for California. On their last evening together she tells him that if he asked her to marry him, she would say yes. They go to a bureau that marries people on the spot and then back to her room, where the landlady throws Joe out until Helen shows her the ring. Helen asks that the marriage stay secret, because her parole does not allow her to wed.

- An earlier Paramount version of the film, which was to have starred Arline Judge alongside Lombard, collapsed after George Raft was put on suspension and $24,000 of his salary was withheld.
- Kurt Weill composed introductory music for certain scenes but, according to Fritz Lang, left him "in the lurch" before the score was finished; Boris Morros, head of Paramount's music department, completed it.
- When B.P. Schulberg reactivated the project at Paramount, he replaced Lombard with Sylvia Sidney, and the male lead went to John Trent.
- Fritz Lang said he was influenced by Bertolt Brecht, who developed a theater style called Lehrstucke, and wanted to make a didactic picture teaching the audience that crime doesn't pay.
