Biography

Vincent D'Onofrio is an American actor and filmmaker whose career spans film, television, and theater. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Hawaii and Colorado, he started on stage, training at the Actors Studio and the American Stanislavsky Theater before making his Broadway debut in Open Admissions in 1984. Stanley Kubrick cast him as Private Leonard Lawrence in Full Metal Jacket (1987), a role that became a defining one. He went on to appear as Edgar the Bug in Men in Black (1997), Carl Stargher in The Cell (2000), and Victor Hoskins in Jurassic World (2015). On television he played Detective Robert Goren on Law & Order: Criminal Intent from 2001 to 2011 and has portrayed Wilson Fisk, or Kingpin, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Daredevil. His producing and directing work includes The Whole Wide World and Don't Go in the Woods. He received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Homicide: Life on the Street.

    Matthew Modine, a friend, suggested D'Onofrio send audition tapes to Stanley Kubrick, the director, in England. After four tapes, D'Onofrio got the role.

    D'Onofrio trained in method acting with coaches Sonia Moore and Sharon Chatten at the Actors Studio and the American Stanislavsky Theater, and that training brought him his first paid part, in an Off-Broadway staging of This Property Is Condemned.

    D'Onofrio both directed and acted in the 2005 short Five Minutes, Mr. Welles, which grew out of his wish to do better as Welles in Ed Wood.

    D'Onofrio first performed music on October 27, 2009, at Joe's Pub in New York City, where he appeared as George Geronimo Gerkie, a comedic country singer.
