Plot summary
Tom Warren returns to his family's home in Washington state after dropping out of Berkeley College. His older brother Charley, twenty-six, has never moved out, and his anger toward their father, Edward, has not cooled. The Warrens are an upper-middle class family coping with failures, infidelities and troubling secrets, and each year they hold a party to mark their misfortunes and bad luck. Charley, the oldest of the brothers, keeps a secret that could tear the family apart. Tom brings Marriet Hoffman, his girlfriend, who is unstable and intends to join the family, and she does not bring calm to the house.
