Plot summary
Ruby Weaver, a New Yorker with a long line of failed romances, meets Sam Deed in a park, and the two fall in love. Ruby grows suspicious of his past, of his fixation on a woman named Chrystie Delancey, and of his talk of causal effect. Pressed by her, Sam explains that he is what he calls a back traveler, from the year 2470. Ruby first dismisses the story, then begins to wonder about it. She brings him to her therapist, Meg Ford. Sam insists that the steps he has taken were meant to alter the course of Ruby's life on purpose, and she starts to doubt his sanity.
