Plot summary
In 1879 an army of Blackstone Agents, led by the gold-mining tycoon Bartholomew Bogue, takes control of the frontier town of Rose Creek. The residents are forced to work as cheap labor in Bogue's mine, and their water supply is polluted. When the townspeople denounce him, Bogue has their church torched and several of them, including the farmer Matthew Cullen, murdered in public view, then gives them three weeks to hand over the deeds to their land. Matthew's widow Emma and her friend Teddy ride out to find gunmen, and their first recruit is the Wichita bounty hunter Sam Chisolm.

- James Horner was tapped to write the score but died in June 2015 before filming began; in July 2015 Antoine Fuqua learned Horner had already started the music and meant it as a surprise. Horner's friend Simon Franglen co-composed the score afterward.
- When the remake was in the planning stages in 2012, Tom Cruise was set to star and Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon were also up for roles; Cruise left the project in December 2013 and John Lee Hancock wrote a new script draft.
- Denzel Washington was Antoine Fuqua's first choice to be cast irrespective of the role, and the producers doubted he would take a Western; Fuqua flew to New York City to negotiate and Washington accepted the offer.
- Vincent D'Onofrio was cast as mountain man Jack Horne on the urging of co-stars Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke, and invented a raw, high-pitched voice for the part. When he asked to test the voice, Antoine Fuqua refused and told him to spring it in his first scene, then laughed so hard he almost ruined the take.
- Antoine Fuqua, knowing Chris Pratt was drawn to Westerns, reached out to him, and Pratt called back a few days later singing "Oh Shenandoah". Fuqua's reply: "He's it. He's Steve McQueen."
- Ethan Hawke was the first person to come on board once the project was finalized, after he ran into Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington at the 2014 New York City premiere of The Equalizer and asked Fuqua to cast him.
- Antoine Fuqua found that every actor the studio executives suggested was white, and set out to make the cast diverse, bringing in African-American Denzel Washington, Korean Lee Byung-hun and Mexican Manuel Garcia-Rulfo.
- The climactic battle between the Seven and Bogue's army took three weeks to film, in weather so bad that the cast and crew waited in the on-set saloon for storms to pass and had to leave the set when the trailer rocked.
