Plot summary
Brooke Meyers runs an art gallery in Chicago that belongs to the artist Marilyn Dean, and Gary Grobowski guides tours in a business he runs with his brothers Lupus and Dennis. The two met at Wrigley Field at a Cubs game, began dating, and later bought a condominium to share. Tension builds over Gary's wish to unwind when he gets home and Brooke's view that he will not work on the relationship, and a dinner party at which he leaves her to tidy up on her own finishes the argument. Brooke ends the relationship, though her feelings for him have not changed. Her friend Addie offers counsel; Gary takes his to Johnny. Since neither will leave the condo, they agree to stay on as roommates, and each sets about provoking the other.
