Plot summary
Keith Gill is a financial analyst in Brockton, Massachusetts, who struggles to provide for his family. In his spare time he follows the stock market subreddit r/WallStreetBets and streams his opinions on YouTube as Roaring Kitty, which his brother Kevin mocks as nerdy garbage. In July 2020, with the pandemic at its height, he notices GameStop's stock falling and sinks his life savings into the video game retailer. By January 2021, activity on the forum shows that Melvin Capital and its founder Gabe Plotkin, along with other hedge funds, have been short-selling the chain on the assumption it would close. Online buyers including nurse Jennifer, GameStop retail employee Marcos and UT Austin couple Riri and Harmony keep purchasing, and the stock price climbs as the fund managers lose hundreds of millions.
