Plot summary
Ray Breslin, a former prosecutor, runs a security firm that tests supermax prisons by sending him inside as an inmate to find the weaknesses and break out. His partner Lester Clark brings in a multimillion-dollar contract from CIA operative Jessica Miller: Breslin is to test a top secret prison whose location his team cannot be told. In New Orleans he poses as a mercenary called Anthony Portos and lets himself be captured. His captors cut out a tracking microchip and drug him, and his colleagues lose him. He wakes in a cell whose walls are transparent and which rotate between blocks; the guards wear black masks and robes. The evacuation code Miller gave him is useless, and the warden, Willard Hobbes, is not the man who was meant to release him. He befriends a fellow inmate, Emil Rottmayer.
