Plot summary
Half French and half Scottish, George McEwan and her younger sister Frédérique go to school in Paris. They spend a long summer vacation in Scotland, and George meets Gavin McCall, a fisherman, while the locals are bringing in the straw. Gavin's sister, Mary, becomes a friend of hers, and George and Gavin start an affair. After the sisters return to Paris, Mary asks them to be bridesmaids at her wedding, and back in Scotland George and Gavin leave the celebration for a cave by the sea. Months later Gavin arrives in France, and George shows him Paris while the affair continues. He asks her to marry him; she refuses, because she wants to study at the Sorbonne and does not see herself as a fisherman's wife in a Scottish village.
