Plot summary
The twentieth-century wars are forgotten, leaving a barren world where most people live hand to mouth in market-towns and dog-towns. What little entertainment exists comes primarily from the Game, played between armored bands of five: a single unarmed runner, the quick, carries a dog skull toward the opposing goalpost while teammates shield the run. Traveling bands of juggs challenge local teams for the townsfolk's tribute and the trophy skull. Deep underground, the Nine Cities keep the League, an elite circuit whose players live in luxury. Sallow once played there and was expelled over an Overlord's wife; he now leads Dog Boy, Mbulu, Big Cimber and Young Gar. Kidda, an ambitious peasant girl who beat the competition in her own dog town, joins them and, with Gar, pushes Sallow toward a League challenge.

- The sport of Jugger was born from David Webb Peoples' 1989 post-apocalyptic film The Salute of the Jugger, which he wrote and directed and which starred Rutger Hauer and Joan Chen.
- About ten minutes were cut from the film for its American theatrical release, and the biggest change is in the ending: the credits roll shortly after the climax even though the picture keeps rolling.
- In 2025, Umbrella Entertainment released a 4K remaster of the original edit, the first time the film had been seen in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio since its cinema release in 1989.
