Plot summary
In suburban Oregon, Justin Cobb is seventeen. He sucks his thumb, a habit his father Mike dislikes and one that has meant major orthodontic repair. Justin calls his parents by their first names, Mike and Audrey, so his father will not feel old. Audrey is a registered nurse who has entered a contest to win a date with the actor Matt Schramm. At school Justin is on the debate team, which he joined because of Rebecca, a classmate who is an environmentalist. She rejects him when he cannot talk about the thumb. His orthodontist attempts hypnosis.

- The soundtrack was originally to consist of several cover songs performed by Elliott Smith, but he died before the project was completed. Tim DeLaughter and The Polyphonic Spree were then chosen to compose an original soundtrack after Mills attended one of their shows; three of Smith's songs remain on it.
- Matthew McConaughey was initially attached to star as Justin's debate team coach, Mr. Geary, but was replaced by Vince Vaughn because of a scheduling conflict.
- The producers had planned to shoot the film in Vancouver, British Columbia, but the production was drawn to Oregon instead after Governor Ted Kulongoski promised a rebate matching the filming costs of Canada.
