Plot summary
Tammy Faye LaValley grows up in International Falls, Minnesota, where her mother Rachel plays piano at a church. Because Rachel is divorced, the congregation bars her daughter. Tammy Faye slips in one day, takes communion wine, speaks in tongues and collapses at the altar, which the pastor calls a miracle. Bible college professors in Minneapolis scold her for wearing makeup, and she is drawn to a fellow student, Jim Bakker, and his preaching. Jim had wanted to work as a rock and roll DJ before a car accident nearly killed his passenger. The two marry over Rachel's objections and against college rules, leave school and move in with Tammy Faye's parents. Their preaching, singing and puppet shows for children catch the attention of Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network, which brings them on as hosts of a children's program.
