Plot summary
A photography portfolio earns Mike Manadoro, 19, a place at New York University, but the award covers only part of the tuition. He lives in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and is torn between its Italian neighborhood and the wider city across the East River. His job at a local car service does not pay enough to make up the difference, and out of pride his father Vinny, a retired sanitation worker living on disability, will not help him get financial aid. Mike begins making deliveries for Tony, the neighborhood's mob boss. At school he meets Kathy Popovich, and he has promised to marry Gina, his longtime girlfriend from the neighborhood.
