Plot summary
Sarah Fittler and her son Tim leave a cinema and ride home in a taxi, though her husband Brad had told her to take a cab. The driver, Bob, takes them to a house away from the city. Bob preys on young women, raping and murdering them. He kills Sarah and holds the boy, chaining him when he tries to break free. Bob gives the child the name Rabbit and intends to shape him into a killer like himself.

- The film was originally rated NC-17 by the MPAA for some explicit violence. Lynch appealed the rating, the NC-17 was upheld, and she later edited the film down to achieve an R rating.

Lynch later said that the NC-17 rating had failed, as audiences still associated it with the old X rating. The cut NC-17 scene, a more graphic version of Mary's death, is included as a special feature.- Lynch was contractually obligated to keep the film to a certain run time, so she had to abbreviate the plot twist. She recognizes that some people find it tacked on, and has said a director's cut would expand on it and make it more natural.
