Plot summary
In 1920s Texas, the Newtons work poor farmland near Uvalde, and Willis, the oldest of four brothers, sees nothing ahead in it. A wrongful conviction puts him in prison, where he meets Slim and Brentwood Glasscock. The three try a daylight bank robbery; it fails and Slim is taken, but Willis and Glasscock get away. A bank director buys the stolen war bonds they still hold, and the deal leaves them with details of other banks worth robbing. Glasscock handles nitroglycerin, blasting safes open, and the pair rob banks at night, escaping by car. Willis argues the bankers are the real thieves and that insurance covers every loss. He brings his brothers Joe, Jess and Dock into the work.
