Plot summary

Hilary O'Neil has had little luck with work, and her boyfriend has been cheating on her. She lives with her eccentric mother. When she answers a newspaper advertisement seeking a young nurse, she is shown out before the interview even starts. Victor is a shy, well-educated man of twenty-eight with leukemia, and his health is getting worse. His father objects, but Victor hires Hilary to live in and look after him while he goes through chemotherapy. The first sight of what the treatment does to him leaves Hilary unsure she can handle the job, so she reads up on leukemia and fills the kitchen with healthier food.
