Plot summary
Hank Thompson once played major league baseball, until a drunken car crash killed a friend, ended that career, and left him dependent on alcohol. Now he tends bar on the Lower East Side, and he phones his mother in California every day to talk about the San Francisco Giants. His neighbor, the punk Russ Miner, heads to London to visit an ailing father and leaves Bud, his cat, with Hank. Two Russian mobsters, Aleksei and Pavel, come to the building asking after Russ. They beat Hank badly enough that surgeons remove a ruptured kidney. Narcotics detective Roman questions him about Russ, whose apartment the Russians have already broken into.
