Plot summary
Griffin Mill works as a vice-president at a Hollywood studio, where his job is to hear story pitches from writers and decide which few can become films. He sits through twenty-five second pitches day after day, and his position is under pressure from Larry Levy, a younger executive hired from a rival studio. Griffin is also in a relationship with Bonnie Sherow, one of the studio's story editors. Postcards arrive at his desk carrying death threats from a writer, one he had promised to answer and then ignored. Griffin has a name in mind: David Kahane, a screenwriter who came to one pitch meeting. He sets out to find Kahane and confront him.

- The Player's famous eight-minute unbroken opening tracking shot was mapped out in advance with models, required the studio lot to be resurfaced for a smoother dolly-and-crane path, and still took director Robert Altman ten takes after a full rehearsal day.
- A wave of A-list stars agreed to cameo in The Player without even reading the script, donating their union-scale pay for the day's filming to the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital, a retirement home for industry veterans.
- Avenue Pictures executive Cary Brokaw twice rejected the script for The Player, in 1989 and 1990, before finally backing the project in 1991 after seeing what director Robert Altman had done with the film Vincent & Theo.
