Plot summary
Letters that American service members wrote home from Vietnam while they were deployed carry the narration, spoken aloud by actors. Soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines wrote them to their families and friends in the United States. The reading is drawn from a published anthology of the same title, which holds many more letters than are heard here. Behind the voices runs archive material: television news coverage of the war, film shot by the U.S. Department of Defense that includes action under fire, and home movies the service members made themselves. Some of the combat footage had not been shown publicly before.
