Plot summary

In San Francisco, the FBI questions a jeweler caught breaking into his own store and learns that an extortionist is holding the man's wife at their house, with the store's diamonds as his price. Agent Warren Stantin goes after him, and the extortionist escapes. The trail leads Stantin to a mountain forest in Washington, where a fishing party led by guide Sarah Rennell had set out from a mine, and the killer has joined the group. Stantin, an agent used to city streets, is out of his element in the backcountry. Sarah's partner, tracker Jonathan Knox, wanted to search for her alone, but he agrees to take Stantin along.
