Plot summary
Thomas Beckett, a Marine, attends the wedding of Neil Finnegan, the son of Paul Finnegan, the best friend who saved his life in Vietnam and who was reported killed before the fall of Saigon. Two CIA officials tell Beckett that Paul's death was faked: the agency recruited him before Saigon fell, and he now runs drugs and weapons out of tunnels in the Vietnamese jungle, where a group of child soldiers follows him. Marked for elimination and about to be seized by Vietnamese authorities, Paul must be killed to spare Neil and Sydney, his widow, the truth. Beckett agrees, but insists on going alone. In Ho Chi Minh City he meets his contact, Quan, a Vietnamese police operative.
