Plot summary
A young, ambitious LAPD officer named Jake Hoyt is sent to ride with Detective Alonzo Harris for a single day, an evaluation that decides whether he is invited into the narcotics squad. Alonzo drives him through the gang neighborhoods of Los Angeles, and his unorthodox style is on display from the start. They catch college students buying marijuana, and Alonzo orders Jake to smoke the confiscated drug at gunpoint, then tells him it was laced with PCP. The two also visit Roger, a drug dealer. In an alley, Jake stops two addicts attacking a girl and subdues them; Alonzo declines to arrest them, and Jake keeps the wallet the girl leaves behind. Later they pick up Blue, a wheelchair-using dealer with crack and a handgun, who informs on his employer rather than go to jail.
