Plot summary
In June 1863, the Confederate army under Robert E. Lee crosses the Potomac into Pennsylvania. A spy, Henry Thomas Harrison, reports to James Longstreet that the Union army is moving toward them and that George Meade has taken its command. Lee orders his army to gather near Gettysburg. In a Union camp in Maryland, Joshua Chamberlain is ordered to take in 120 men of the 2nd Maine who had resigned in protest, and he talks all but six of them into fighting again. At Gettysburg, John Buford's cavalry spots Confederate troops approaching and chooses to stand and fight on the ground it holds, sending word for reinforcements.
