Plot summary
After a covert operation in Cuba collapses, the mercenary Jonathan Shale comes home to Miami, where his girlfriend, Jane Hetzko, teaches history at Columbus High School. The inner-city school has a gang problem, and Juan Lacas, who leads a gang called the Kings of Destruction, dislikes Jane in particular. She is attacked during a morning jog and her leg is broken. Jane and Shale believe the assault is tied to the gang, and Shale, a Vietnam War veteran, goes undercover in her classroom as a substitute teacher without telling her. He finds the school in poor condition and cannot control his class on the first day, and Principal Claude Rolle warns him that the school forbids corporal punishment.
