Plot summary
Private detective Harry Dobbs is inept at his job, and his girlfriend, Doris, is angry with him. Miss Dolan, a client he meets in a nightclub, hires him to trail her lover, Rick, and says the man may want her dead. Harry sets out after a different subject instead, a man who appears to lead a double life, and the case leads him to Mrs. King and Mrs. Ellen McGraw, two women who both seem married to that same man. A second investigator, Stella Wynkowski, turns up, and Harry works the case alongside her, unable to tell whether she is on his side.

- Alan Rudolph said Love at Large was made for Orion and put together in about a week; when a studio person asked if he could put a murder in, he replied that it was "a murder mystery without a murder."
- Alan Rudolph said the film's story came from two inspirations: a screenplay about a female private eye that he could never get financed, and a story he had heard about a man with two families.
