Plot summary
Lewis Moon and Wolf are stranded in Mãe de Deus, an outpost in the Brazilian Amazon, after their plane runs out of fuel. Commander Guzman wants the Niaruna tribe to leave its village, fearing the gold miners moving into the area will kill them and bring trouble with the provincial government, and he offers Moon fuel for the plane if he bombs the Niaruna village from the air. Missionaries Martin and Hazel Quarrier arrive with their son Billy to bring the gospel to the Niaruna. They meet Leslie Huben, who heads the mission work in the region, and his wife Andy. A Catholic priest wants to reopen his church's mission to the tribe, whose previous missionaries were killed by the Niaruna. Hazel fears the Niaruna; Martin is drawn to them.
