Plot summary

Eddie Devane, a young sailor, has run inventory scams with his partner Howard Finster and keeps hidden money that Howard knows nothing about. With his discharge a day away, Eddie is ordered to help transport a prisoner held at Camp Lejeune, together with Chief Petty Officer Rock Reilly, who is authoritarian and tolerates no nonsense. Eddie resents the duty, and the two men clash repeatedly on the road. Howard, watching Eddie walked out of a superior's office by two seamen, believes he has been arrested for the scams, then searches Eddie's desk and finds the cash. The prisoner is Seaman Toni Johnson, and at a diner she tries to get away dressed as a waitress before she is caught.
