Plot summary

Dan Merrick and his wife Judith are driving along the coast of northern California at night when their car wrecks. The crash leaves Dan with major injuries and brain trauma, and the result is psychogenic amnesia. After extensive plastic surgery he comes home in Judith's care. Those close to him help piece together the past he has lost, among them Jeb Scott, the partner in his architectural practice, and Jenny, who is married to Jeb. Dan also has flashbacks to events he believes came before the crash. The accounts he is given of his former self do not match, and a large bill from a pet store leads him to Gus Klein, its proprietor, who says the payment was for work he once did as a private investigator.
