Maurice Denham
Biography
Maurice Denham was an English actor whose career stretched across radio, television and film. Born in Beckenham, Kent, in 1909, he trained as a lift engineer and began acting in 1934. He first became known through radio comedy series including It's That Man Again and Much Binding in the Marsh, using many different voices, and he supplied all the voices for the animated Animal Farm (1954). His films included 23 Paces to Baker Street (1956), Night of the Demon (1957), Two-Way Stretch (1960), Sink the Bismarck! (1960), H.M.S. Defiant (1962), Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965), The Day of the Jackal (1973) and 84 Charing Cross Road (1987). He was nominated for a BAFTA for The Purple Plain (1954). On television he appeared in Talking to a Stranger, The Lotus Eaters, Edward & Mrs Simpson and Doctor Who, and he continued radio work as Maigret and Poirot.

Denham attended Tonbridge School and qualified as a lift engineer. He and fellow actor James Robertson Justice both played amateur rugby for Beckenham RFC.
Beyond film
Denham took the role of Chief Inspector Jules Maigret in multiple radio series starting in 1976. He was also Hercule Poirot in a 1985 BBC radio version of The Mystery of the Blue Train.
